Good, healthy Mexican food which is similar to Poquito Mas or Baja Fresh. The portions are decent and the salsa bar has good selections. The service was fast and the place was clean. I would definitely go back.

It was late so we tried this place. The gal taking our order was very friendly and that was positive. If found the prices to be a bit high. The service was ok and the food was eh. Or course I used to live in Highland Park and the prevalent Hispanic place in the Bay Area so my standards are a little high. If you are are hungry, this place will do. Like others I was disappointed by the salsa bar. The bowls has run out of onion and cilantro and no radishes. This probably does better at lunch.

Went here for lunch today with my husband for the first time. It was not good at all. Horrible..Never going back My husband ordered the chicken quesadilla and when he got it...there was barely any cheese and it looked like it came out of a box. Though I'm sure it didn't, just there was barely anything in it. He also went back to the people at the counter because he didn't get his full meal with the beans and rice on the side. The lady he spoke to was super rude to him. I got the grilled fish taco's. They were so nasty. I had to douse the taco with a hot and med sauce, but then when I was trying to eat the second taco ( I was really hungry and trying to give it a chance) there was a bone and I had to spit it up. :-( I wouldn't go here for food at all. Stay away!!!

How do you screw up a chicken quesadilla? We ordered two for the kids and they came out pale white like the tortillas hadn't been grilled but microwaved. The chicken was dripping with orange grease and the kids ware grossed out by it. All our dishes were basic - nothing special. But the basics like chips were even bland. They weren't light and crispy. Rather they were kinda stale and cardboard-ish. I did't realize how awesome Rubios was until I ate here. That's pretty much sums this review up.

  • Leah D.

Strictly meh. I had a tostada salad where all the ingredients were sort of muddled together in a mess. It was just OK. As others have mentioned, there's chain restaurants that serve up similar fare (Rubio's, Fresca's, Baja Fresh), only they do it better. I don't hate them, but I won't be back anytime soon.

I haven't been here is over a year but from what I remember it was pretty good. I mean the food was fresh and tasted good. I used to come here several times a week. I liked the staff and that it was fairly quick (lunch break). I'll come back soon.

Everything made here is super fresh!! Hardly no lines and plently of parking!!

I ordered a fairly large burrito with chicken, black beans, lettuce, etc. Decent Mexican food, but nothing to rave about it. I'm not sure I would come again as their is definitely better Mexican food in the area.

Chicken Tacos were good! Really enjoyed the fresh salsa bar.

I really like this place. I usually get a Burrito Sabroso or sometimes carne asada tacos. The marinade that they use on their beef and Chicken is really good. Try putting a squeeze of lime on the tacos! So good! Oddly enough their Chocolate Chip cookies are really good too.

Skip it and go somewhere else. I don't even know where there are Mexican restaurants in the same area, but I would rather drive 10 minutes to go somewhere good. I had a gourmet burrito and it tasted like something I've had at Rubios or Baja Fresh before. As big chain restaurants, you would think their burritos would be worse, but I remember them being better. I'm not a food critic or anything but I know what tastes good, and this just isn't anything to spend money on. My bf ordered the taco salad and it looked like crap. Oh, and the salsa bar is sad :(

I went with my 17 yr old daughter afer running errands. VERY DISAPPOINTED! After I convinced my daughter to try it we were both not happy. I ordered the -special- chicken enchilada plate & my daughter ordered the carne asada taco plate. We both agreed the beans tasted burnt & the rice was very bland. My enchiladas had a sweet tasting 'canned sauce' poured over them & my daughters tacos were very dry. Needless to say we both barely ate our food & wasted the money. Also they are a little over priced.

My bf and I were both really hungry one day, and were picking between King Taco or City Mex. Just because of our proximity to City Mex, we opted to go here. I had the pollo tacos and my bf ordered a 2 carne asada and 1 carnitas tacos. The pollo was okay, the carnitas are very juicy itself (and topped with a spoon of guac), and the asada tasted like beef jerky. I'm not lying, it really tastes like beef jerky flavor. I wished they had radishes so I could eat them with my tacos, but they didn't. If I came back, I'd stick to the carnitas. Seriously though, people who come here expecting amazing Mexican food are not going to be happy. Also compared to better Mexican places, the prices are slightly steep for the quality you get. Just lower your standards before coming here.

This is a review of their vegetarian burrito only. It's not just a meatless burrito, but chock full of roasted veggies and cheese. Terrific.

I'm really confused as to why people were giving this place such a bad review. This was my first time trying this place, and MAYBE they improved it since the bad reviews, but I had a great experience. And yes, the service sucks, I dont think they even know how to smile or say thank you, but the food was great. I ordered their deal of othe day which was a chicken tamale and a cheese enchilada. It came with a side of salad, and I asked for 2 sides of rice. I devoured the tamale with rice along with a good helping of verde salsa. I was very satisified with thier salsa. The enchilada was alright, i didn't finish it. I' m not sure if I was just too full to finish it or it just tasted bad. My fiance had the 2 steak tacos and he devoured those. He too was in love with the verde salsa. I will definitely go back, but the owner has to do something about customer service. No reason to start losing customers because the service is bad.

MEH. If one of the many salsa selections at the salsa bar isn't good and the chips aren't good I feel like there's nothing left to look forward to but yet I always like to give the benefit of the doubt I had the Taco chicken salad nothing to applaud over, it was lunch time, I was hungry, but I've had better Service was good, clean, friendly staff, and it was cool in there

i dont know what it was about this place, but the food was not good. I order a steak burrito which came out to about 7 bucks and it was probably one of the worst tasting burritos ive tasted. The meat was flavorless and all the other stuff inside it was not satisfying. I got it to go and when i got to my destination (about 1/2 a mile away) my food was somewhat cold and dry. the free chips they put in the bag were cold and some were stale. definitely not coming back.

This is nicer than fast food, but not quite a restaurant. I see a few low star reviews, maybe people were expecting this to be a restaurant. The food is good, appropriate for the price. You can get better.. for more $. This was much better than Del Taco or something. It's like a Mexideli, you order at the counter, they call you or bring it to you. Good burritos, and quesadillas, I like the guac, and beer. I like that they sell beer, have good cheap food, have a huge parking lot, nice staff. A bunch of us were meeting and all driving separately and some didn't know the area well, so we chose City Mex because they are right at the corner, can't miss them, with ample parking.

  • Brian S.

This is one of my "regular place to go" for lunch. Price is reasonable and the food is very good. Chicken burritos without an overpowering proprietary taste (Baja Fresh). I love the salsa bar. Get the Sabroso burrito-you won't be disappointed

  • Keefes T.

It's hard to screw up Mexican food but they did. Everything was luke warm... thanks for getting it out to me quickly, but I would have waited longer for the cheese to melt.

  • Kira B.

I like that they have lots of options for vegetarians. I ordered a combo that came with rice, black beans, and a vegetable quesadilla. Lots of food for the price, seems good quality. Fun assortment of veggies inside my 'dilla.. carrots, green beans (??), broccoli, mushrooms. The only reason I won't give this place 4 stars is because of their salsa bar. It had one of those sneeze guards, but none of the salsa was sitting on ice or being cooled. It was just sitting out in the open, and it was warm. Maybe I'm crazy, but that just screams food poisoning to me. I avoided it, but my boyfriend ate it and was fine. They also sell tiny bottles of Sutter Home, which I thought was funny/cool.

I previously liked this place, but recently the portions have been reduced drastically! In addition, the food has gotten a little commercial for my taste! However, I will stick to this place until I discover something better. Im just sadden of its deep declivity, lol!

  • Lane K.

STAY AWAY! If they are close to closing they just leave whatever meat the have out on a warming tray and serve it up till it's gone instead of cooking up fresh stuff. My fiance got the worse food poisoning of his life after getting a beef burrito here. Like, projectile vomitting, curled up on the floor shaking because of it. Don't eat here.

  • Alex A.

I ALWAYS have a great experience here EXCEPT (apparently) when I am going to review on Yelp! The food is, typically, very good. The staff, typically, friendly. The (good) music is pumping. I like salsa (both the music and the food) so this joint, typically, is exactly what I want when I go there... not this time. Vanessa wasn't rude but not friendly at all. The food took longer than it should have. Not a terrible experience...just disappointing. I'll be back to review again but, for now I'm going to call it a "3". Be ready next time City Mex. In the mean time, check out one of the Super Mex locations!

Pretty good food at slightly expensive prices. I keep coming back because they have flavors I don't get anywhere else. This is a great place to go if you are looking to try some new flavors.

Why do I torture myself?!?! I should know better than to eat at a place called CITY MEX. Dry, bland, not good and pricey pseudo Mexican food. Ugh. I deserve what's coming to me...in 5...4...3...2...1... death.

Love the 7 vegetable burrito and my husband gets the padrino. The tomatillo salsa is the only one I like.

I am giving City Mex three stars for their shredderito burrito, which has been my absolute favorite ever since they had a restaurant on Los Coyotes Diagonal near the Traffic Circle in Long Beach (it was called Pechanga, but had the same menu). I went on Saturday, because I missed the shredderito, and I wasn't disappointed. It is a salad in a burrito, with shredded lettuce, cabbage, carrots, almonds, and chicken, in a lime cilantro vinegarette that I absolutely crave; as I am writing this, I am trying to figure out how I can get over there tomorrow for another one. I had their mildest salsa, which is basically chopped tomatoes and onions, and it was really fresh, but I was there at 11:30 in the morning. I have had other items on the menu, but I only go for the shredderito now (do I sound a little obsessed ? Oh, yes, it also comes as a salad without the tortilla!). Decent food, cheerful service, and a comfortable atmosphere.

Decent place for Mexican food in the Hill. I ordered a burrito that was the size of my head, and it was ridiculous. It was especially packed at lunch with a varied crowd of blue-collar and professional people. Staff was friendly, service was quick. So why am I only giving it 3 starts? I think the food was OK, but nothing that I'll crave. Compared to some of the awesome places in Long Beach, this is just another face in the crows.

I liked the burritos here. Simply little mexican food joint. Nothing fancy.

It has a nice name and the tacos are pretty good. The place is clean and refreshing. You meat lovers will love the carna asadas as they are packed with tasty seasoned beef. In a shopping center with Costco...you can't go wrong. Umm...'cept for the guacamole. For the record, I'm a guacamole snob. I'll only eat it if it is made from scratch...either mine or at the table. I asked if the guacamole was made fresh and they told me YES. I'm like "Hell yeah...hook it up!!" But they were lying. It was that packaged shit! Fresh, my ass. They walked across the parking lot and got it FRESH from the frozen section at Costo. They lose a star for lying. With a short shelf-life, it is hard to keep guacamole fresh, no need to tell a fibby. I was happy with the condiments. Several kinds of salsa and sauces, cilantro, onions, lemon and lime. Now that is what I call a Taqueria. None of that all inclusive shit with stuff put in your taco that you don't want. Like rice...yeech! I'm going back to try a burrito. If it is better than a boyfriend, I'll make it a frequent stop!

i've been coming to this city mex grill for about 8 years. how did i forget to review it all this time? especially since i like their burritos so much. the place is clean, the service is fast and on the friendly side, the prices are well, not expensive but they're not cheap either. high on the average spectrum you can say. they have mexican drinks like horchata and their salsa bar is very good plenty stocked with fresh limes. yes, limes, not lemons. this is my go to spot after shopping at the costco nearby. whenever i shop hungry this place is the great equalizer as it keeps me focused from buying things i don't need and i am buying just because i am hungry. the meat is tasty, and the food is made on the spot. i recommend their carne asada burritos. don't get the shredded beef ones as those aren't as good. their quesadillas are pretty indulgent as well. also, they're vegetarian (not vegan) friendly.

"good friends, great food...life as it ought to be." That's the slogan for City Mex Grill/Pachanga eateries. I was eating with good friends the other day and life was pretty much the same as always...but I wouldn't say the food was 'great.' This particular City Mex Grill is located in the Signal Hill Costco and Home Depot shopping center near the Temple/Cherry intersection. What was I doing outside of the O.C.? Meeting some friends to check out their new place. We decided to grab a quick lunch at City Mex since it was close and could accommodate a fair sized group (6 adults, one child). I wasn't impressed by the place, but I wasn't exactly disappointed. Checking out the inside and outside reminded me of a SuperMex or Baja Fresh type of restaurant: not exactly fast food (a la 'Alberto's), but not exactly a sit-down restaurant (a la 'El Torito'). The place was relatively neat and tidy, but I [silently] questioned the cleanliness of the place when I noticed about 3-4 flies hovering in the waiting area. You know the kind: those flies that sort of hover up and down, just hangin' out in the place 'cuz this is where all the cool flies go to chill. They don't bother you while you're eating, but they make their presence known so that you realize just how 'authentic' this place really is...shyeah, right... Despite my run-in with the fly-guys, my carnitas burrito was decent. It was full of large chunks of pork, pico de gallo salsa, and guacamole. Accompanying my burrito was a trio of tortilla chips, black beans, and rice. Altogether, the meal was tasty and satisfying. I wasn't hungry after the meal and I wasn't ready to burst at the seams, either. My only complaint would be that the carnitas didn't taste as fried as they normally are. I'd actually consider the meat more 'roasted' than fried. Also, my burrito had the age-old problem of getting soggy towards the end (with meat and salsa juices). "Ugh! Me no like burrito fall apart!" Alas, it fell apart at the end and I had to 'evolve' into eats-with-a-fork-and-knife-man. "I say, old chap, this burrito hath disintegrated! Bollocks!" I guess I'd just say this was another one of those 'ehh' meals. Just okay. I'd go back if I was in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way for the food. Check it out if you're in the area.

I have been here many times , I do think it is a bit pricey for what it is , But I have found the food to be consistant, I also like their hot salsa, I was surprised at all the poor reviews here. The plae always looks clean to me

    (3)
  • Liza B.

Semi- pricey. Burritos are too dry and not fresh! And I got food poisoning from the ceviche, last time I was there; and haven't been back since! The staff is lazy & unmotivated. I hope that places goes under and they Chiptole there!

I should have read the reviews or trusted my nose. Upon gracing my presence at City Mex Grill, I was greeted not by trumpets but with the stench of old burritos in the drain. Yelping forward, I trusted I could make this soon to be bad dream a fuzzy reality by downing a cold beer. The only problem is ALL the beer was warm. Seems to me they believe a wine cooler keeps things cold enough aka they keep beers warm enough to make you think they are cold. I had them pull out all their types of beer, and all were warm. Now to the food. I believe Costco sells better tasting tortillas next door, and some better corn chips too. I think they were going for a Rubios look and feel without the cost. Anyways while trying to find seat it took me 3 tries to find a clean table.....I mean really? I'll take a taco cart on 7th over this place and have a cold beer at home. But Wait, There's More!!! How can this be City Grill #4? Did the magical ingredient of poor food, bad service, and warm beers lose its appeal after #3?

    (1)
  • Gina C.

Go straight for the carnitas guacamole tacos...it's what they do best. They are packed with meat but not too greasy and the guacamole is fresh and delicious. Not a fan of the chicken tacos though.

Consistently great fresh food. We are addicted to the Shredder salads. City Mex is one of our go-to spots for take out. The value for the money is excellent.

I usually enjoy having a meal here. I find the place clean, well-priced meals / value, and mostly friendly prompt service. However, often when I show up after work and just 1 hour before CMX closes, I find the staff already cleaning up. Salsas are getting put away, the fountain drink area cleaned off, and the crew sometimes sweep around your feet. There is one young woman who always gets my order incorrect. It is sometimes the wrong item, sometimes she has to ask me 4X about my order and then it is still incorrect, she can not remember whether the order is to go or dine in. When I specify dine in, the meal is prepared to go. THIS ALWAYS HAPPENS WITH THIS ONE PERSON. I write her off as incompetent, rising to the highest level in her career hopefully. I still enjoy the place and the other friendly efficient people who work there. I hope the owner gets wind of my review somehow!!! ADVICE: APPROACH WITH CAUTION, and EXPERIENCE FOR YOURSELF!!!

After reading the previous reviews I was confused as to why they gave it 3+ stars and had such a mixed opinion. Had to check it out myself as I pretend I am somewhat of a Mexican food connoisseur. First off, the place was immaculate! Super clean,(not a single fly) and there were 6 other people there other than myself. This place is so big it seemed empty even with that many people. I didn't see a salsa bar anywhere. Instead the 3 different flavors of salsa were on the counter and not on ice. It was a red, green and mole salsa. None were hot, all were smoky, tangy and sweet. They lost points for that because sometimes you need some salsa with a kick. These salsa options just wasted my time. The employees were very friendly, one even seemed a little stoned. Their menu is small and desperately lacks variety. Most Mexican restaurants do though I suppose. But your choices are burrito, burrito in a bowl, soft taco, torta, quesadilla or a salad. Really? I was disappointed as I didn't see any hard tacos, only soft. I hate soft tacos. Gimmie crunch! I ordered the Taco Gordo w/steak which was excellent! Recommended of all the food I ordered. That's because it has rice, beans (I had pinto) lettuce, cheese and sour cream on corn tortillas. All those extras helped to blended the strong smokey taste of the steak. The ceviche taco was OK but not worth finishing. The ceviche salad which was so-so but not worth finishing. To give you an idea as to the kind of ceviche I DO like, I prefer the ceviche tostada at Hole Mole, just shrimp and lime juice with a little salsa and chips. Fresh and addicting! Theirs is a mix of fish and overall rather bland. The steak taco was so-so. I agree with the the first reviewer, I prefer my meat to be on the crispier side not roasted. The steak is more like a brisket or roast, no thanks. And I just realized, it's flavor is similar to beef jerky. Fine for a minute but then....over it! Side note: if you like onions and cilantro on you taco be sure to grab some at the salsa counter. They don't put any on for you. So overall, the food didn't have the pizazz that will make me ever go back which makes me feel bad because the employees were so nice. In case you were wondering, I was there at 8:15pm on a Friday night.

This place was pretty good. The salsa condiment table was full of awesome sauces, onions, cilantro, Pico de Gallo, jalapenos... all the Mexican goodness you need to make your burrito the most Mexican possible. The Padrino burrito was "el maximo", I got stuffed one I added all the Pico and sauces. I'd go back.

Its nice. The staff was very friendly! Me and my wife prders the seven vegie burrito and it was fabulous! I'm super loving the fact that they have a decent vegetarian menu. The tables and chairs are so sticky it kinda ruins your meal. Why are they so sticky?!?!?!?! But over, it is a very decent place and we will back to eat again!

This was one of my favorite restaurants in the Long Beach area. I happened to pass by and saw that they were closed. I was just there about 2-3 weeks ago and had no idea. I would get off work early in the AM and stop there for Nachos. The food was always fresh. Does anyone know of any other locations that may be open?

Absolutely impeccable service and incredibly delicious food.. No exaggeration! The girl behind the counter who took my order was genuinely sweet and friendly.. Even the cook was friendly.. I ordered for here but had to get it to go as i couldnt finish my food. The girl was very accommodating as well! Just an all around good vibe coming from them.. I ordered one of their many burritos on the menu.. I chose steak as my meat option.. Sadly, I didn't take a pic.. But, let me say this, it was friggin delicious..it was hot and fresh..packed full of flavors..and it was huge.. Bigger than chipotles burritos and way fresher and hotter.. Taste way better also.. Chipotle is extremely overrated.. Food is never hot when I order from there..no salsa bar and too americanized.. I assume people just love it due to that assembly line concept of order and preparation of food.. The reason I brought up chipotle is because city mex is similar as far as the food and the price you pay.. although I wouldn't necessarily call it americanized.. You want customization of your order? Well, city mex has enough variety on their menu and you could always substitute what you like and don't like.. Anyway, give city mex a try.. You may never go back to chipotle after you do..

Ugh. The best thing I can say is that it didn't make me sick. If you want real, true, authentic Mexican food then don't come here. Less processed then Taco Bell but the food generally has little flavor and has been sitting on a steam table since the Nixon administration. If you are starving and can't make it across the parking lot to Subway, I guess it will do.

One of the best Mexican food place to eat at. Been coming here for quite some time now and they've now added Breakfast options. Some people think they open at 10am, but they are open at 7am for breakfast. Breakfast is from 7am-10am. Their Burrito deals are great though they went up in price recently, it's still a good price since it comes with a drink or coffee of your choice. The place is also clean and staff is friendly. Bathrooms in the other hand is a different story. They've had plumbing problems for awhile and as much as they try to keep it clean,it's the smell that gets you. Unless you really have to use it then go right ahead.

I bought the shredder, vegetarian meal for my friend. She loved it. I ordered another one and brought it to her but they accidentally put chicken on it. We called and they said to come back and they would replace it. We are in El Monte so couldn't, and they said next time I am in town , they would refund money and give us another shredder. I came in got the money back plus a shredder that promised had no chicken. We got it home and it looked fine. Under the lettuce the cook hid chicken in it. The first time it was on top and accidental. The second time it was dilberate!!! This happened on Thursday both times at 630 pm. On Monday all was well. But beware of this cook and his tricks. We got chicken, you get spit?? We got horrible assistance from mgr as well.

I've been here a number of times over the years as my car club holds their bi-monthly "cruise night" here. We usually "kick the tires" about 30-40 minutes before heading inside to get something to eat. yelp.com/biz_photos/city… SERVICE: Is basic. They take your order and your money at the counter. Pick up your food at the counter when they call your number. The staff have been generally pleasant and friendly each time I've been in. The place is usually pretty clean and the salsa bar is usually kept filled, unless it's near closing time. FOOD: The food is fine for Mexican / Tex-Mex fare. I've had the Tostada salad ($7.25), the Sabroso and Tomatillo burritos ($6.35 each) as well as a quesadilla ($4.75 - $6.60) and they have always been fresh and pretty tasty. The "salsa bar" offers 3 different salsas as well as a diced tomato type of "salsa" (I use the term loosely). The salsas have some really good flavors that I quite enjoy. OVERALL: Honestly I'm not a big fan of Mexican food, but everything I've had here has been fresh & pretty tasty. 3 stars.

My preferred place for carnitas tacos and chicken and steak quesadillas. The salsas at the salsa bar are very good too. Fast services, reasonable prices, good food.

First time there -went at lunch. My friend recommended the shredded salad and it was horrible. Iceberg lettuce taken out of bottom metal serving drawer that was close to the floor and not lined in plastic, 1/4 cup of chicken if that, all tossed in a tortilla shell that was deep fried in rancid oil. I didn't have enough time to talk to the manager about it, only ate the few morsels of chicken and when I finally tasted the tortilla shell felt obligated to future customers to let the counter order person know about the rancid tortilla shell. She was kind and offered me a new one-BUT a new rancid tortilla shell was not what I was looking for. Would have stayed to speak to the mgr to give constructive criticism but had to get back to my meeting. Would never go there again!! BTW This dish cosh $8.75 and probably cost $1.00 to make if that.

DON'T DO IT. AVOID EATING HERE AT ALL COST. The service sucks bad not to mention the food is gross. I watched the cook throw food around and slop food on plates like a lazy bum. No one's wants to eat slop tossed together. I was really disappointed because I just moved in the area and was excited to try the Loco mex food. NEVER WILL I EAT HERE AGAIN. Salas bar wasnt fresh looked like I had been sitting out all day and mostly empty. Coke machine out of ice and when I asked for ice they responded like whatever. Anyways besides the horrible service the food taste gross. I didn't even eat it. I will not ever ever ever waste my money here again.

The food here is fine. Average, but not exceptional. The space is big and the staff have been friendlier lately. Typical Mexican food (burritos, tacos, nachos, etc.). It's moderately better than drive-thru restaurants, but there are lots of better Mexican spots around. I just feel like the food is old (not prepared fresh). No proof of this, just a feeling. Meh.

Not bad. Over priced. I ended up here with some coworkers and we all enjoyed our lunch, however, we all agreed, that it was pricier than we were used to spending considering all the lunch specials we can find in the area. I had a street taco and quesadilla that came with rice and beans. It was a combo however, it didn't come with a drink. Now, if the food was awesome, and there was more food - I'd be singing a different tune. But it wasn't. On both counts. I had a Carnitas taco. The Carnitas was a little dry. Adding salsa helped. However, I tend to like my Carnitas a little juicy and tender. The quesadilla wasn't too bad. I liked the splash of guacamole mixed in with the cheese but it was just a normal portion size. Standard beans and rice. For just over $10, I would have hoped to walk out feeling fat and happy. I walked out satisfied however, thinking about all the better places I could have been to for that price.

No. No. No. No. No. I am not a picky person, you are forewarned. However, I was pretty put off to find a little curly hair on my chicken taco. Gross. Stuff happens, who knows what flies in the air. But sadly, as I moved on to my steak taco( with confidence that last issue was a one time thing only, what are the odds) , there was a very tiny curled up white bug. I knew it was a bug and not something else because when I pushed it to cut it(trying to find out if it was a plant of some kind...) this string of what I can only assume is organs spilled out. I'm never eating here again, and a health food inspection is needed. I'm pretty disappointed this restaurant isn't more careful with the food they're feeding to others.

City Mex Grill is basically a Baja Fresh. If you changed the name, you wouldn't even notice the difference. First off, I knew things were going to be bad when there was a smell of burnt meat as we walked in. The menu is about what you'd expect at a place like this along with vegetarian options which initially drew my wife here. She likes the Vegetarian Quesadilla. I went with the Combo #3 which is three tacos with rice and beans. I was asked if I wanted black beans or pinto beans and I stated "pinto beans please" The order includes chips and a salsa bar. The salsa bar is unimpressive. There's pico de gallo, medium and hot sauce. If you order tacos you have to build your own tacos with the onions and cilantro since all they give you is the meat and tortilla. The food came up and it was rather disappointing. The meat had no flavor, the rice was dry and not edible. As for the beans, the "pinto beans" is actually refried beans. Someone needs to tell the staff here that there is a difference between the two. Overall, not good and not recommended.

I am not sure why this place doesn't have better reviews. Granted I have only eaten here twice and both times gotten Padrino burritos. And the restaurant is nothing fancy, though it is clean, quiet and spacious. But both times, the burritos were the best and almost too big to eat. Really like their burritos. Will have to try other stuff on the menu down the road.

Over priced mexican food without the taste to back up the pricing. I Only come here during my lunch hour but even then, i'm rethinking that, considering the slow service. Word of advice, a line for pick up would be greatly appreciated! I found it useless to call in my order when i still waited 10 mins in line to pick it up.

I've eaten here a couple times, nothing special but reliably good Mexican food. I love their carne asada. Portions are filling. Beans and rice are mediocre. It's the salsa verde that keeps me coming back!

Take this quiz: 1. What does a 60s era stock car and Mexican food have in common? 2. What tastes great without any seasoning? 3. What does the counter girl say to you when you approach to order? If you answered NOTHING to all three you WIN!!! .. what you win is a reason NOT to go this place... I would compare this to my local roach coach, and you know which would be better.. The burritos taste terrible and the other dishes are not much better.. oh.. they have a salsa bar.. so my suggestion would be to get something from the food truck and use the salsa bar..oh wait.. what would that cost?... nothing.

We always order the Nachos with Chicken added and we split it because it's large, and comes with a bag of chips! The chicken is always cooked perfectly and tastes great.

I'm surprised with the negative reviews, I thought what I had was quite tasty. I've been here three times and every time I get the nachos with carnitas. The food has always tasted great so far.

This place has good food and I like the salsa bar. They only get 2 stars because staff has no personality or warmth what so ever and I don't think the place has been professionally cleaned since they opened 16-18 years ago! The tables, chairs, windows, and floors are seriously GROSS! The music is really loud and annoying too. Get your food to go but if the front of the house is this dirty I don't want to think about what's in the kitchen. Management should be ashamed.

Good lunch spot and fresh... only been here for lunch and I always enjoy it... quick and nice service. Its not the best spot thats why it gets 3 stars... but its consistently good.

The taquitos are store bought with mystery meat. Over priced burritos with no flavor. I don't want to eat here ever again.

We used to love City Mex and haven't been here in a minute because we tend to go to Chipotle and now I remember why. We used to go to City Mex before Chipotle ever existed, but what a rip off City Mex is now. Their burritos are the size of the Del Taco burritos but cost almost $7.00. The Chipotle Burritos are HUGE and cost less. City Mex has been in this location a long time, but let them put a Chipotle across the street or even close by and they will be out of business so quick. Next time I am wanting a burrito, I'll just go across the street to Del Taco. I will be glad when this place closes and so we can grab something different when we finish our Costco shopping. Hopefully, it won't be too much longer.

It's been since my teen years that I finally returned only because I had a short lunch and it seemed better than Costco pizza or Subway. Should have went with Costco- at least I would have gotten to eat my favorite food. And I was smart enough then not to come back, my memory just failed me this time. This place is nice and clean inside and reminded me of Baja Fresh. One thing I go to Mexican restaurants for: chips and salsa. If the chips and salsa make me so full that I hardly have anymore room for my entree, then you know it's a good Mexican restaurant. Nope, not this place. I could tell it was fresh and not leaving grease stains on the parchment paper but dang, I don't even think my hubby finished his chips. In fact, I think he left most of it alone. I had a smaller amount so I ate it but it really wasn't to die for. There was no salt on them so no flavor. The salsa was fresh but I def think they cater to the low-sodium crowd. I got the "gourmet burrito." It was good enough but my tortilla was cold. Hmph! Spent almost $20 on a mediocre meal and that was with only ONE small drink.

Been to this place twice now....I must say their burritos are pretty tasty...salsa bar pretty decent..free chips..(can't complain about free) However...my second attempt on this place...wasn't impressed :-( The staff are very sweet and friendly so A++ on them The tacos I got...I wanted some fish tacos (fried) of course and I thought it was a clear understanding I wanted fried fish tacos... When I got my order it was grilled...:-( ok no worries ill try it....ummm im sorry but eww...I love sushi but this was not fresh grilled fish...partially undercooked so be careful I took my tray back and told them I was sorry but couldn't eat it ...note they did offer to make me something else which I thought was very generous...but I did have to get back to school....so they gave me a refund no questions asked...so I may try them one more time in the near future... As for the customer service A ++ Food...needs some work y'all and may want to think about adding French fries....just saying....its a classic to add to a burrito...well least for me..but then again I'm just a werido Parking is good Restaurant is very clean open You can see them cook the food which is also nice :-)

Been coming here for the past few years and it's always been a solid and consistent quick casual mexican restaurant Food Tried: Carne asada burritos and tacos are really good here. Quality steak Cevice salad and tacos are also good Parking: huge parking lot Overall, the quality of the food is great here, the place is clean and the salsa bar is one of my favorites. I'd easily place City Mex over Chipotle, Qdoba, and Baja Fresh

This place is stable for Mexi-Cali food. They have healthier options and delicious salads. Great stop for lunch since it's close to my work place.

My bf and I had to make a run to Home Depot and decided to stop here on a whim. The place was pretty busy when we got there (it was lunch time, after all), but the lady (Cecilia) working behind the counter was very attentive, helpful, and friendly. Once we placed our order, we got our soda and then saw the fresh salsa bar. Yum! Our food was ready about 5 minutes later. We had ordered the mini nachos with steak, my bf got the 3 taco combo plate, and I got the tomatillo chicken burrito with no rice and on a wheat tortilla (I love that they have this option!). We both loved our food; the nachos were especially delicious (even by boyfriend loved them and he usually likes nachos with the fake nacho "cheese'). My burrito was so fresh and amazing and my bf really liked his tacos. The only thing he wasn't crazy about was the rice, but that's probably his picky preferences. Overall, this place was great: the service, the food, the price! So good and we didn't feel greasy like we had just had Mexican food. Everything was so fresh.

THis place is pretty OK. it's all put together right in front of you so there's not much to hide. Pretty typical modern Mexican quick serve restaurant. Nothing too special with the menu but decent alternative to fast food chains. their salads are their differentiator. Good flavors and decent portions for the price. This is a go-to lunch spot if you are shopping in the Costco/HD/Petco plaza in Signal Hill.

I don't know why this place has so many poor reviews--- it's good!!! First of all, the grill is right out in the open behind the cashier, so you can see AND SMELL (yum!) your food being cooked fresh. I got the carne asada tacos (the view of the grill sold me) and they did not disappoint. The meat was tasty, lean, and tender. The salsa bar is all kinds of awesome and was fully stocked with 4 different kinds of salsa (all delicious), peppers, and all the Mexican-fixins you could want. Overall, the place was clean, parking was convenient, and staff was helpful & courteous. I would def come back.

Best breakfast burrito around. They have a couple different options I.e, sausage, bacon, carne asada they all come with these soft garlicky, buttery eggs, potatoes(I always sub black beans) cheese, salsa fresca, a side of chips and a small coffee or soft drink, all this for only $5.25. Best burrito best bargain. I think they are only served during the week until 11 after that they have really decent nachos and burritos. My fave is the saladrito I think thats how you spell it lol. Anyhow its a mexican chicken salad in a tortilla tasty. Go check them out for yourself

I only order the OJA-ROJA SALAD: $6.95 Red leaf lettuce, choice of grilled chicken or steak, guacamole, tortilla strips and my favorite cilantro vinaigrette dressing. So the 4 stars is for the Oja Roja Salad only, ample parking and good service. Yes, I will be coming back for more. If you haven't tried the Oja Roja Salad, you should. You may raise your 1 star to 3 or more after :)

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
